FAQ
our food:
We have developed our feeding recommendations according to the guidelines of the European Pet Food Industry Association (FEDIAF). The FEDIAF guidelines are regularly reviewed and further developed, and our recommendations are based accordingly.
In addition to these industry recommendations, we consult with dedicated pet nutritionists to ensure your four-legged companions eat meals you can trust. Of course, every dog and cat is different and portions may vary depending on age, breed and activity level. Even the weather can play a role! If you are concerned about your pet's weight or eating habits, you should seek veterinary advice.
We recommend storing any wet food not used immediately in a clean, sealed plastic or glass container in the refrigerator for a maximum of 48 hours after opening.
Our tins and bowls are made of metal and food stored in opened metal containers may take on a metallic taste due to oxidation. It is therefore generally recommended that food packaged in tin cans – whether for humans or animals – be stored alternatively after opening.
After opening, close the packaging tightly or store the food in an airtight container to keep it fresh (see also the recommendation on the packaging). Store the food in a cool, dry place. How long our food stays fresh depends on how quickly your dog or cat uses it, the size of the bag and how the food is stored. Store the food as recommended and use it within the expiration date to ensure it maintains optimal quality.
How to feed your dog:
If you want to change your dog's diet, always do so gradually. Sudden changes can cause stomach upset. If you're switching to a different formula or new food, it's best to introduce it into your dog's diet gradually over the course of about a week. Start with a mixture of 4/5 of the previous food and 1/5 of the new food. If your dog is sensitive to dietary changes, this may take longer.
It makes sense to get your dog used to different recipes so that he has variety in his diet - both in terms of taste and nutrition. We don't eat the same thing every day, so why should your four-legged roommate? Try a varied menu and enjoy an enthusiastic dog.
Whether wet or dry food depends on a few factors. What matters most is what your dog likes more. Both Lily's Kitchen dry and wet food are complete and can be fed separately or together.
If your dog is particularly picky, wet food is best as it has a slightly stronger smell and can therefore be more appetizing for the animal. Dry food is more nutrient dense and therefore can be fed in smaller quantities, which may be more convenient for you. If you choose to feed both, adjust portions as needed and as directed on the package.
Most of our adult dog formulas can be fed to weaned puppies four months and older. However, we recommend feeding with our puppy recipes as they are tailored to the nutritional needs of puppies, with appropriate calorie and protein levels for healthy growth.
Depending on the breed, puppies can reach adult size between 6 and 18 months old. Our food calculator will help you plan, but it's always best to ask your vet when your puppy is expected to be fully grown.
How to feed your cat:
Due to their physiology, cats don't naturally drink as much as dogs. They usually absorb most of their moisture from their prey. Wet food therefore helps to keep your cat hydrated and we recommend feeding predominantly wet food. Our dry food recipes for cats are ideal for in-between meals, as a treat or mixed into wet food for a crunchy texture.
